The next morning, we watch the sunrise. I have never ever seen such a beautiful sunrise above the Suriname jungle. The mist on the canopy, the Red howler monkeys howling, different bird species singing their songs… it was one of those “will-never-forget” moments. I think we’ve sat there for an hour, just staring into the distance. After breakfast, we head half-way down the mountain, to see the rare Guianese cock of the rock. This bright orange bird is a favorite amongst bird watchers that visit Suriname. Not found in many spots, Fred is very fortunate to have two spots on his property where they have territories. After having spotted one, we head further down the mountain to go for a jungle walk.
After a long day of walking around and filling up water bottles in the creeks, we are picked up again by our bus driver, Bert, who takes us back to base camp. Finally a decent-sized creek/river to bathe in! We sat and bathe for a really long time, also mainly because under water the mosquitos couldn’t get to us. That night we went for a night stroll with the others. This night was definitely a frog night; we must have found at least 20 tree frogs of different species and heaps of ground frogs and toads. The morning after, we relax and go for a quick bird-watching tour, but were very unfortunate and didn’t find many species. After another quick bathing, we gather all our gear and head back to Paramaribo.
